ABOUT COURSE
Beginning Aug 2009
PREREQUISITE: 9th Grade Physical Science and Advance Biology
GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION
This advance course is designed for those students wanting a detailed study of the structure and function of the human body with an emphasis on homeostatic mechanisms. Focus will be at both micro and macro levels reviewing cellular functions, biochemical processes, tissue interactions, organ systems and the interaction of those systems. Students will engage in active inquires, investigations, and hands-on activities for a minimum of 50% of the instructional time. Safety instructions are integrated into all activities.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course is designed to reinforce advance biological principles and emphasize their application to human life, to enhance student use of anatomical terms, and increase student knowledge and understanding of the major organ systems in the human body with an emphasis on homeostatic mechanisms. This course will prepare the students to meet the pre-requisite into any medical professional major at any University Baccalaureate of Science program. Lastly, this course is to prepare the student to be able to attend the second year course in order to obtain a possible eight (8) of college credit toward their major.
LEARNING OUTCOMES (FIRST YEAR): The student will:
1. Use knowledge of prefix, suffix, and root word meanings to define unfamiliar terms.
2. Describe structure locations using correct anatomical and directional terms.
3. Understand scope of various branches of medical science.
4. Identify and describe functions of the major cellular organelles.
5. Identify and describe the role of four main classes of biological molecules.
6. Locate and identify functions of various tissue types.
7. describe the major organs and functions of, as well as diseases affecting, the following organ systems:
a. Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology;
b. Integumentary ;
c. Histology;
d. Skeletal;
e. Muscular;
f. Immune System and Infectious Diseases;
g. Circulatory and Lymphatic; and
h. Excretory System
